Joseph D.'s Story
Following graduation, I worked at Columbia Records until March of 62. Then went aboard the U.S.S. Satda (AGSS 488) at New London, CT to serve two years on active duty required as part of my enlistment in the Navy Reserve. I completed submarine school during the summer between Junior and Senior years at Pitman High School.
While on active duty I married Nancy Ritchie, May 21, 1962, who I had met during summer vacation along the Delaware Bay Shore.
Our first daughter was born November 28, 1962 while I was on active duty. We lived with Nancy’s parents for the rest of my tour.
Completed active duty in March of 1964, went back to work at Columbia Records for a short while before going on night shift at GE Switchgear Plant at 69th and Elmwood, Philadelphia.
I ran injection plastic molding presses at Columbia Records and compression plastic molding presses at GE.

was born November 25, 1964. Nancy held back on delivering Kathy until Thanksgiving turkey was done. Kathy arrived very soon after Nancy got to the hospital.
June 1975 I was hired as Molder Helper at the Naval Air Factory on the Philadelphia Navy Base. I was surprised to find that the job was for molding molten metal poured into sand-cast molds. Since I was a helper the substance molded mattered little. I learned a lot about sand-casting and metal melting and related equipment and processes.
Progressed from there to heat-treating and plating. Worked there until I got hired as Apprentice Metal Fabricator in the same organization.
Spent four years as apprentice and became a Metal Fabricator journeyman in 1975. My employer’s name was changed to Naval Air Engineering Center (NAEC) Eventually slated for closing. Actually relocated hto Lakehurst, NJ, NAS Lakehurst.
